Painted for the Endangered Species Coalition’s national mural project marking the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act, this wall lives in the Village of Doña Ana — New Mexico’s oldest federally designated settlement. An endangered boreal owl and a Gila monster share the wall with yucca, cottonwoods, and the mountains, while human silhouettes move through the landscape.

Made with the Doña Ana Village Association, the mural ties the fate of endangered and migratory species to the human story of migration — lost resources push both animals and people to move. Community members added the final touches at a public event on Endangered Species Day 2023.

“I come from a family that immigrated to America, and I see a lot of narratives that don’t really represent who we are.”
